Modern India has a rich compilation of classical dance forms that are collectively referred to as Shastriya Nritya, and believed to have originated between 500 BC and 200 BC. Bharata Muni's Natya Shastra, the ancient Sanskrit treatise gives a description of classical dance forms in India. The Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Ministry of Culture, India recognises eight classical dance forms viz. Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam, Odissi and Sattriya.
Bharatanatyam traces its origin to sometime between 500 BC and 200 BC in the ancient Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu. It generally consists of a solo dancer accompanied by vocalists and other musicians.
Mohiniattam or Mohiniyattam originated in Kerala and epitomizes the Lasya style in the Natya Shastra. The term Mohiniattam is derived from 'Mohini', the female incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu and 'Aatam' which means rythmic movement or simply, dance.
Kuchipudi originated in a village by the same name in Andhra Pradesh. It represents a dance-drama representation. Like all other classical dance forms, Kuchipudi developed as a religious art.
Kathak may have originated around 400 BC.
